Life and Writings
Rachel Louise Carson was born on May 27, 1907 in Springdale, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University) in 1929, studied at the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory, and in 1932 she received her M.A. in Zoology from Johns Hopkins University. During the Great Depression (1929-1939), the United States Bureau of Fisheries hired Carson as an aquatic biologist to do radio scripts of nature writing.
To supplement her income, Carson also wrote articles on Natural History for the Baltimore Sun. In the federal service she developed a fifteen-year career that culminated in her becoming Editor-in-Chief of all publications for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
