Moses, c.1500 B.C.

Prophet

Moses and the Ten Commandments by James Tissot

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
Deuteronomy 6:6

Early LIfe

Moses was born around 1400 B.C. in lower Egypt. According to the Book of Exodus, Moses was born in a time when his people, the Israelites who were an enslaved minority, were increasing in numbers and the Egyptian Pharaoh was worried that they might ally themselves with Egypt's enemies. Moses' Hebrew mother, Jochebed, secretly hid him when the Pharaoh ordered all newborn Hebrew boys to be killed in order to reduce the population of the Israelites.

Pharaoh's Daughter has Moses Brought to Her by James Tissot.jpg

Through the Pharaoh's daughter, the child was adopted as a foundling from the Nile river and grew up with the Egyptian royal family. After killing an Egyptian slavemaster (because the slavemaster was trying to kill a fellow Jew), Moses fled across the Red Sea to the desolate desert of Midian, where he encountered the Angel of the Lord, speaking to him from within a burning bush on Mount Horeb (which he regarded as the Mountain of God). God sent Moses back to Egypt to demand the release of the Israelites from slavery.
