Flower A. Newhouse called Dionysius the Areopagite (1st century) the first Christian Mystic. He was an advanced soul who came back again in the 5th century as a Master to write under the same name of his previous incarnation, though his true identity is lost to history. He is known as Pseudo-Dionysius, and his writings of the late 5th and early 6th centuries have influenced Christianity for over 1500 years.
All the great mystics of Christianity owe a debt to this soul because he was first to bring mysticism to our world in written form. He was the one who broke away from the theological dogma idea and brought forth the glorious teaching that humanity may be touched and infused by God. That each of us may commune and know God directly, thus being overshadowed, healed and saved by the Eternal Presence.
After Paul, the next greatest of the mystics of the Christian faith was Dionysius, who was the first bishop of Athens. He is mentioned in Acts as believing in Paul when Paul spoke on Mars Hill, as it is called, in Athens. He was a very wonderful soul, highly gifted.

Dionysius, First Bishop of Athens
Dionysius the Areopagite was a judge in Athens, who as related in the Acts of the Apostles, (Acts 17:34), was converted to Christianity by the preaching of the Apostle Paul. His conversion is believed to have occurred around 44 A.D. Dionysius later became the first Bishop of Athens. He was born in the early 1st century A.D. and was believed to have been martyred in the late 1st century.
