Richard Wagner was born on May 22, 1813 in Leipzig, Germany. His father died only 6 months after his birth.

Wagner revolutionized opera through his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk ("total work of art"), by which he sought to synthesise the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts, with music subsidiary to drama. His compositions, particularly those of his later period, are notable for their complex textures, rich harmonies and orchestration.

Until his final years, Wagner's life was characterised by political exile, turbulent love affairs, poverty and repeated flight from his creditors. His influence spread beyond composition into conducting, philosophy, literature, the visual arts and theatre. Wagner completed 113 works of musical art. He died of a heart attack on February 13, 1883 in Venice.

The influence of the heavenly is expressed in many works by Richard Wagner... For instance the pilgrim motif in Tannhauser is very esoteric and quite influential from that level. The grail motifs in both Lohengrin and Parsifal, and the Valhalla motif in The Ring, all these numbers bring up visions of another world in solemn unearthly courts.
