Hildegard of Bingen, 1098-1179
Christian Mystic, Composer, Botanist
St. Hildegard was devout and clairvoyant. She would know...times of thunderous sound both beautiful and melodious. She would see these glorious fountains of color, with fragrance enfolding her to bring her inspiration. Also, she would know when the light grew strong...that she was to receive instruction, which she did.Reverend Flower A. Newhouse, More about the Angels
O Frondens Virga chant by Hildegard of Bingen
Hildegard's Early Life
St. Hildegard of Bingen, a German Benedictine abbess, was a brilliant visionary, as well as a composer, philosopher, Christian Mystic, botanist, doctor, polymath, and a prolific writer in a time where few women wrote. Despite all her accomplishments Hildegard always felt at a bit of a disadvantage due to the lack of a formal education.
Hildegard of Bingen, A Wielder of God’s Light
'With my mouth,' God says, 'I kiss my own chosen creation. I uniquely, lovingly, embrace every image I have made out of the earth's clay. With a fiery spirit I transform it into a body to serve all the world.'
Hildegard of Bingen, Matthew Fox's Original Blessing
